The Velvet Gerbil Wheel.

9/2/26

Written By Heather Mee

I have a very good job.

I work with smart people. I make a good living. I've spent most of my career in fashion and brand building, which I still love.

So naturally, I want to leave.

This makes perfect sense to me and somewhat less sense to other people. It's comfortable. It's familiar. The velvet is quite nice.

But it's still a wheel. And I've decided I want to get off.

The funny thing is, I don't want to stop working. I just want to stop working like this.

I want to choose more of what I work on, who I work with and how I spend my time. I want to keep using everything I've learned, but I also want to do things I haven't done before.

I want to work with people who make me think. I want to build things. I want to ride my bike on a Tuesday.

And I want to find other people who are thinking about what's next too. People with things they still want to do, learn, make, explore, maybe even change.

This doesn't feel like winding down to me. Quite the opposite.

It feels like opening things up. Which may be the whole point.
